Creating An Album Cover For The DigiPac

As part of the indie genre, album covers and Digipacs conventionally are completely abstract and have no or little relevance to the band itself. For example, Vampire Weekend:

These separate album covers both have no relevance to the artists and do not show the artist on either the front or back cover. These Pictures have effects on them which would have been done using a picture editing software or with professional lighting. I really like this kind of art and I appreciate its simplicity and I'd like to try and use this in the creation of my own album cover.
I thought at first of using something like that of Banksy as his artwork conveys across quite sinister messages in a simple way:

However, I thought that this was nothing at all to do with the sort of genre i was aiming for. I needed something which displayed originality and simplicity which would give "The Skeleton Boys" a "cheeky" side to them but quirky at the same time. I decided I would use something slightly illustrative by using a skeleton of some sort and i would use effects to achieve a vintage-style effect or the effect that would make the picture look old and dated like it was taken on an old film camera as i had seen this used on The Libertine's back cover when i analysed it. To do this, I used the Hipstamatic App on my sister's iPhone and took pictures of a skull nailed to a wall in their hallway. Here is what i achieved:
I liked this photo, but i thought it used up too little room on the cover and i thought it was a little unclear. So i took another, this time closer and held the camera more still to achieve a better quality photograph:
After looking at the photograph for some time, the screw was starting to annoy me as it was very central and was ruining the vintage look, so I edited out the screw using the spot healing brush on photoshop:

After the editing, here is the product i ended up with:
Obviously, I am very happy with my design, however, i think that feedback for my album cover is needed from my target audience, so i am going to ask people from my target market group on facebook and from home what they think and then create a post on what they think.

  1. Good post Joe. Have a look at what Julia Harvey has produced to see how she has used fonts in her work.
