Picking The Band and Song

As you know we started of with a list of 20 bands that we like and draw inspiration from, after this we needed to choose 1 to take a song from. To do this we each picked 1 band each from the list of 20;

Jess – Two Door Cinema Club
Meg – The Little Comets
Joe – Mumford and Sons
Harry – Sleigh Bells

After this we each voted for the band we liked the best; the results were as follows

Two Door Cinema Club – 0 votes
The Little Coments – 3 votes
Mumford and Sons – 0 votes
Sleigh Bells – 1 vote

So from this it was clear we would chooses a song from The Little comets so we went away and listened to song from TLC. After this we had a list of songs we thought would be good to make a video for, this list is as follows;

Adultery
One Night In October
Joanna
Dancing Song

We then got together listened to all of them then talked about which one would make the best video, this easily became apparent as we thought One Night In October had lyrics that were easy to learn and we liked the beat to the song. So that is it and how we chose One Night In October by The Little Comets as our song choice for a media video

Market Research- Where Our Audience Might Shop

With our chosen genre of music, Indie, comes quite a distinguished fashion style. This makes it very easy to pick out high street stores, or in some cases, less high street and more independent boutiques. I think the type of people that listen to bands like Little Comets or others that came under our inspiration like Two Door Cinema Club and Vampire Weekend, take pride in dressing unique with a bit of an edge and genreally what they feel comfortable in. However in my opinion, the style is becoming more and more popular today which essentially eliminates the individuality of the style.

The first type of shop that our audience would shop in are high street ones that include: Topshop/ Topman, H and M, Urban Outfitters, American Apparel and Wellgosh. These three stores do sell branded wear as well as their own brand and are very popular amoungst our audience. You would find the majority of our males shopping in Wellgosh and females in Topshop.

Another type of store that is popular amoungst our genre are vintage boutiques. There are the more well known ones like Rokit or Beyond Retro, or ones in our local town of Leicester like Dollymix Vintage and Goldrush. I find that these shops do tend to stock more female than male fashion but that still doesn't mean that the males of our audience don't shop here. There are extremes to vintage which I think only a few people dare to risk getting away with, so I find that the most popular types of garments that are bought are Levis denim shorts, 80's shirts or shell suit jackets.

Lastly, there's second hand shops or bargin stores. These include charity shops like Age Concern or Oxfam as well as the online store eBay. Charity shops aren't popular with everyone because of the lack of choice, or if there is a choice you might struggle to find anything, but seeing as though the majority of our audience could be students they are always looking for ways to save money which in charity chops they can do! Ebay is also a good choice because, being students they might not have much time to go out shopping because of school work, so they can do their shopping online and find some real bargins that no one else will have.

Market Research- Indie/ Alternative Charts

As a market research task, I looked into songs that were popular today in our chosen genre indie. The first chart I looked at was iTunes, and unfortunately there wasn't an option for indie so I chose alternative as they are very similar genres and are often combined together. iTunes gave me the option to choose from many countries to look at, and although we're from the UK and making our video here, it was useful to have a look as I could see what songs were popular elsewhere as well as in the UK. I am pleased to see that not only in the UK, but also in the US and Australia there are bands in the top 10 that are in our list of bands to choose from, so it shows we already have a good idea as to what bands are popular in the genre that we have chosen.

The second chart I chose to look at was Radio 1's Indie Chart. I didn't find this one as useful as iTunes because even though this chart classed itself as indie, it didn't quite match the indie genre I had in mind. This is because it consisted of artists like Adele, Example and Wretch 32, and these are artists that we're positive we don't want to use for our inspiration or music video.
