There are many images and videos that are going to influence our ideas for our video of "The Skeleton Boys". Our influence will come from varying artists and musicians. The aim of this post is to tell you in as much detail as possible where and why I am getting inspiration from.

I couldn't embed this clip as it had been disabled, however, there are many points in this video which will inspire our video as it is full of disjuncture and that is what we're aiming to cover. The use of simple props to complete strange tasks such singing whilst being in a bin; placing as many bottles on a person as possible; playing the guitar whilst wearing a purple hippos head etc. These elements of the music video highlight that the music video does not have to make sense in order to be an iconic video, but what I have noticed is that the tasks must stay simple and the audience must be able to figure out what is going on otherwise it will not be enjoyable for them to be completely confused.

Again, in this video, simplicity is key. The use of stop motion, quick paced and on-beat editing all adds up to make what could be quite gruesome with the hearts hanging from strings actually quite chirpy and interesting. Also, the style in which this is filmed will also be used as part of our inspiration.

Obviously not all inspiration has to be the music video, we need inspiration for album covers too, so here are a few band's album covers from the genre we are aiming to achieve:

These images are all very unique and taken in completely different situations - we need to take inspiration from their abstract ideas and use them within our own ideas.

Examples of other texts- Images

Althought the style of the image doesn't match the up-beat and fun genre of our band I like the idea of the logo and quite like to use it somehow. This logo works well for out band and they have the name of the band and underneath there are four skulls, which could represent the four members of our band. The changes we would need to make to the image so it matches our genre would be to have a more friendlier looking font, and change the skulls underneath to actual skeletons and also have them looking less scary. One thing I would keep the same would be the colours, because even though they are quite boring and used often, white stands out best on black and working with colour can always be risky because it could end up looking quite unprofessional.

I like this album cover for The Maccebees a lot as I haven't seen one similar to this before and would quite like to use to the idea of cartoons on the front. If we were to use this idea as the bands album cover, I would definitely change the colour scheme as the colours used are quite monotonous, but as stated previously, we would have to be careful about what colours we use and the way we use them because we want the band to appear professional. I would also like to have the characters as skeletons. We would have to have someone that was able to draw cartoon like skeletons, but I think this would work well.

Examples of other texts - Stop Motion

This is a famous video using stop motion between two friends.

One effect i would like to incorperate in our music video is stop motion and the effect created from it. The video above it is completley made using stop motion, althought it makes a good effect there are many downfalls to it. Firstly it can be expensive, they used 222 t-shirts of various colours and sizes which even shopping at the cheapest shops would be expensive let alone that they have designs printed on them. It is also a very tricky thing to create as if there is one frame missing it throws the whole 'motion' of the video and if lighting and movements drastically change then it distracts from the movie look and you become more aware that it is a group of photos put together.

This is another video completely using stop motion but instead of using images she has completely writen the lyrics on her body to co-inside with the lyrics in the song, again i don't want to have our whole video using stop motion but i think parts of it such as when they sing the lyrics 'One Night In October' we could have the lyrics appear on papers  as she has or even on the body of the band. 



Here is the final video, although it only being 4 seconds long i think it is very effective, 2 out of the 4 members in our group can skateboard we thought we might introduce that into the video but sparingly as we are all adamant that we don't want to make it into a skating video or promo.

Examples of other text - Foals 'Balloons' Music Video

This video is distinctive due to the abstract style of filming, location and various shots of a disjuncture theme. From the start of the video up until 1:34 it is purely the band being filmed, some clips of them performing in what looks like a room in someone's house, as well as clips of them sitting around the location drinking tea and holding a bird. I really like the idea of using clips of the band that are meaningless to the performance but look effective and traditional - such as the sitting around a table, or holding an unusual object. 

I really like the fact that the extras within the video are all dressed in a black uniformed costume; the only thing we would not take as inspiration from this video are the use of dancers, as that is not the style of music video we are going for with our version of One Night in October.

The fast paced edits of the shots look really effective as the song is upbeat and fun, this is similar to our choice of song so we will take into consideration the length of each clip and try and include as many shots as possible to make our video memorable and interesting. We discussed the editing effects we like as a group and agreed on the sped up clips as being a top choice due to it's popularity, this effect is used in many music videos, but particularly in the official 'One Night In October' video by the Little Comets. I am sure we will try and incorporate this effect in the post production of our video as it is an original way to show editing within music videos.

I like the whole style of this Foals video, including the outfits the band are dressed in; they look 'normal' and relaxed in comparison to some bands that have been dressed up in videos and sometimes look too abstract and come across as if they are trying too hard to stand out. The set-up of the instruments in this video is also designed well for the location they have used, everything is close together which allows the camera to show them all performing at once as well as individual close-ups of the band members and their instruments.

Idea For A Band Logo #4

Here are two ideas for band logos that I have created. In order to create this, I used a cartoon imagery of a dollar sign and I also scanned in a hand drawn scull. From this, I used the magic lassoo tool to get the general shape of the scull. Once I had done this, I had to simplify the cartoon dollar, so I used the rubber and the lassoo button again. Once I had achieved the shape I wanted, I started a new document and incorporated the two designs into one image. I then thought that just black and white may be a little simple - so I added red to emphasise the dollar sign.

Idea for Band Logo #3

This post is to show one of my first designs for our band logo, we have used it as a header for our blog in the meantime as we decide on our final logo for the CD covers and posters to represent our band.
I created this GIF image myself using an editing programme called Photoscope, I used black and white because the contrasting colours are simple and effective yet classy at the same time. The font used is actually called 'Indietronica' and can be found on www.dafont.com, a website for free fonts.
For the logo on a CD cover or poster the text would obviously be still and not of a GIF form.
